Where you live and the climate in your area will dictate the best grass types for your lawn. Grasses can be divided into 'warm season grass' and 'cool season grass'. Warm season grasses are ideal if you live in the southern US states and cool season grasses will be best if you live in Canada or the Northern states.
The states in between, the transition zone, are difficult for growing grass successfully as some types prefer warmer climates others cooler. In general cool season grasses do better in the transition zone than warm season grasses.

Lawns are generally composed of a mixture of grasses as each type has different strengths.
In addition to the climate other factors need to be considered.
Shady Areas : of the cool season grasses, fescues are the best choice for shade.
Heavy foot traffic: These areas will need a tough grass. Perennial rye and Kentucky bluegrass are suitable here.
Dry areas: For an area prone to drought one of the improved Kentucky bluegrass strains would be a good choice.
